Toural Square | Guimarães
Toural Square is the main square in Guimarães and is considered the heart of the city. Stay with us and live this experience!
The oldest references to this Square date back to the 16th century. XVII, when cattle fairs and also bullfights were held here, next to the main Porta da Vila, outside the wall and for this reason it was baptized with this name.
The recent requalification of Toural Square, in 2012, the year of the “Guimarães European Capital of Culture” event, gave the square another dimension. The Renaissance Fountain with three bowls was replaced (it had already been there in the 16th century) and the existing fountain was removed.
The central floor, built of quartz and basalt stone, shows the layout of the Historic Center of Guimarães. Another particularity is the marble border guides of the square, with recesses and projections that symbolize the city wall.
All of this can be appreciated from the 60-metre-long golden balcony, the work of Portuguese artist Ana Jotta.
The balcony is full of padlocks, which Guimarães and visitors have been using since 2012, symbolizing union and love.
Toural Square is a symbol of city life in Guimarães, where we can find modern hotels, local shops, restaurants, pastry shops and cafes, bookstores and tobacconists, in a dynamic that is present in the daily life of the city.
