King Afonso | Henriques
King Afonso Henriques
The man that is considered the first king of Portugal and is presumed to have been born in 1106, 1109 or 1111, the historians didn’t reach an exact date, however the date of his death is certain, due to the fact that it was documented and it shows that was in 1185.
The king was known by two nicknames, the first being the “The Conqueror” due to the fact that was during his reign that most of the Portuguese territory was obtained and the other was “The Founder King” due to the fact that he was the first king of the reign of Portugal.
The most important feat of D. Afonso Henriques was the battle of S. Mamede in 1128 where the king and his mother, D. Teresa de Leão, were involved in a conflict to determine if the Portucalense County (Portugal) would submit to the reign of Leão.
With the victory of the king, he assume the power but it was only in 1140 that was proclaimed king of the Portuguese’s because in that year was realized the Zamora Treat, treat that gave the definitive independence to the County over the reign of Leão.
Without any doubt the king D. Afonso Henriques was one of the most important persons in the history of Portugal and in Guimarães we give the importance that he deserves due to the fact he lived most of his life in this city.
