Guimarães Castle is one of Portugal’s most important historical monuments. Located in the city of Guimarães, in the north of the country, it is often referred to as the “Cradle of the Nation”, as it is linked to the foundation of Portugal and the childhood of Afonso Henriques, the first Portuguese king.
🏰 Castle History
- Built in the 10th century by order of Countess Mumadona Dias to defend the territory against Moorish and Norman attacks.
- In the 12th century, it was enlarged by Henry of Burgundy, father of Afonso Henriques.
- The castle played a crucial role in the Battle of São Mamede (1128), where Afonso Henriques consolidated his power against his mother, D. Teresa.
- Over the centuries, it lost its military importance and fell into disrepair, but was restored in the 20th century.
✨Curiosities
- In 2007, it was voted one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal.
- Legend has it that it was inside this castle that King Afonso Henriques was born.
- It is one of the country’s most visited tourist attractions and a symbol of national identity.
