Church of Sao Francisco

Church of Sao Francisco | Guimarães

The Church of São Francisco, which was originally part of the Convent of São Francisco, was born next to the medieval wall. D. Dinis.

In 1325 it was destroyed, taking 75 years for its reconstruction, in the place where we can see it today.

The interior of the church reveals a style that came from the great 18th century renovations, with a rich decoration in carvings and tiles that transformed the sober Franciscan temple into a church in Baroque style.

In one of the interior chapels, there are the mortal remains of S. Gualter, one of the first Franciscans and evangelizers of the region.

Inside, numerous works of art of sculpture, painting, carving and sacred art can be appreciated, highlighting works by renowned authors such as Soares dos Reis, Giuseppi Berardi and Roquemont.

A visit to the sacristy is mandatory to appreciate a marble table, with colorful inlays, in the Italian Renaissance style.
